NORFOLK, Va. - A sailing center project in Norfolk is getting help from philanthropist Jane Batten.
The Virginian-Pilot ( http://bit.ly/LgNgLb) says Batten has pledged $1.5 million for the sailing center, which is being developed by Nauticus.
The center will teach maritime skills and sciences to disadvantaged youths. It will have a fleet of 20-foot sailboats and will use Schooner Virginia for educational purposes and summer camps.
Nauticus Board of Directors chairman William Cofer says the center will help open the Elizabeth River to youths who haven't had access to it.
