FARMVILLE, Va. - Authorities say an armed man led police on a chase that ended with his death after a shootout.
Farmville police said in a news release that 45-year-old William A. Wingfield Jr. was pronounced dead after exchanging gunfire Tuesday with a police officer in Prince Edward County.
Police say they were notified about an armed man who entered the town Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said the man had been involved in a domestic situation and was under a protective order that prohibited him from having a gun.
Farmville police and Prince Edward County Sheriff's deputies stopped his vehicle but the man sped from the traffic stop, firing at the Farmville police officer.
The man stopped on Forestview Road, near Back Hampden Sydney Road, where the officer and the man exchanged gunfire.
