Thursday - 5/3/2012, 12:30pm  ET

WHEELING, W.Va. - A veteran officer in Virginia is returning to his home state to become Wheeling's police chief.

Media outlets report that City Manager Robert Herron announced Moundsville native Robert Shawn Schertfeger's appointment on Thursday.

Schertfeger will replace Robert Matheny, who took a job in March with the National White Collar Crime Center in Fairmont, W.Va.

Schertfeger will begin his new duties June 4.

He has been a member of the Albemarle County Police Department in Virginia since 1991. He most recently served as captain of the department's operations bureau.
