Veteran Norfolk Judge Louis Sherman retires

Wednesday - 1/2/2013, 9:53am  ET

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A veteran judge in Norfolk has stepped down after serving nearly two decades in general district and circuit courts.

Circuit Judge Louis Sherman retired Monday.

The 66-year-old Sherman tells The Virginian-Pilot that he knew growing up that he wanted to do something in the public sector. He was enamored with the Kennedy family's dedication to public service and he volunteered on Robert F. Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1968.

Sherman says he still believes the legal system is "the crown jewel of democracy."

Beginning in February, he will continue to serve on the bench as a substitute judge.
