International Paper readies for opening of Va mill

Friday - 5/25/2012, 10:34am  ET

FRANKLIN, Va. - Steam is rising again from a converted International Paper pulp mill in Franklin in preparation for next month's opening.

International Paper closed the paper mill in 2010, idling more than 1,000 workers. The company announced in May 2011 that it would spend $83 million to convert part of the mill to produce fluff pulp.

Fluff pulp is used in diapers and other absorbent materials.

The new plant is expected to employ more than 200 workers. More than 800 construction workers have been on site for months and will remain for several weeks.

The Virginian-Pilot ( http://bit.ly/MILXJW) reports mill workers are clearing debris and buildup from the steam lines before power-generating equipment will be started.
