WASHINGTON — An off-duty police officer — a woman who was shot at early Wednesday morning while driving along Suitland Parkway — had been at same club as the man arrested in the case, according to D.C. Superior Court documents.
Authorities do not say in the court records whether the 12-year veteran knew or had a run-in with the suspect, Romeo Hayes, 27, of Southwest. But police say shortly after firing at the officer, Hayes and others tried to carjack an another off-duty District detective and shot him four times, The Washington Post reports.
These latest records are helping authorities investigate the unusual shootings early Wednesday involving both off-duty officers. However, police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump says the investigation is ongoing and declined to further elaborate. The female officer also declined to comment.
According to the arrest affidavit, Hayes was at Opera Ultra Lounge on First Street NW, and left about 2:30 a.m. The document states that “this establishment is the same location [the female officer] was at prior to the shootings.” It does not state when the officer left the club.
Hayes has been charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill. A D.C. Superior Court judge ordered him detained until a preliminary hearing Sept. 2, 2014.
The shootings of the detective and the attack on the other officer are among the latest incidents in a recent crime spike that has left 21 people shot and several carjacked since August 8.
