WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Park Service is closing monuments and memorials and ending trash collection on the National Mall due to the government shutdown.

Spokeswoman Carol Johnson said Tuesday that workers are barricading the monuments and shutting down fountains at the World War II Memorial. In total, fountains at 45 sites are being shut off.

About 330 park rangers and other staff are being furloughed due to the government shutdown. But Johnson says U.S. Park Police will remain on duty to guard the monuments and memorials.

Trash collection ends Tuesday on the National Mall at parks maintained by the National Park Service in downtown Washington.

Meanwhile, construction work will continue at the Washington Monument to repair earthquake damage. Johnson says money for that work was already appropriated.
