Tuesday - 9/10/2013, 9:20pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Jesus Aguirre, a long-time education who is director of Washington's parks department, has been named the city's new state superintendent of education.

Mayor Vincent Gray announced Aguirre's appointment on Tuesday. Aguirre will assume his new role on Oct. 1.

Aguirre spent most of his career in education and arrived in Washington in 2007 as part of a transition team leading up to former chancellor Michelle Rhee's tenure. He was the school system's director of operations until then-Mayor Adrian Fenty named him to head the Department of Parks and Recreation in 2009.

The Washington Post reports (http://wapo.st/16iNXSe) that Aguirre will succeed Hosanna Mahaley, who stepped down this year to take care of her husband.
