WASHINGTON (AP) -- A health care consultant has been named the new health director in the District of Columbia.
Mayor Vincent Gray on Wednesday announced the appointment of Joxel Garcia, saying he has substantial experience in health care and in working in multicultural settings.
Garcia is a founding partner in two health-care consulting firms, Faunus Global and Aegis Health Security. He was previously the president and dean of medicine at the Ponce School of Medicine and Health in Puerto Rico.
He's scheduled to start as health director on Aug. 1.
He replaces interim director Saul Levin, who left the health department to become the new CEO and medical director of the American Psychiatric Association.
