WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Washington man has sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatally shooting another man in 1995.
Thirty-five-year-old Maurice Fair had pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed in the death of 18-year-old James W. Belton. Fair, who has been incarcerated since 2007, was sentenced Tuesday and will receive credit for time served.
Belton was shot twice in the head in his northwest apartment. Prosecutors say Fair had gone to Belton's apartment to smoke marijuana and became fearful that Belton would hurt him.
Authorities say Fair, while hospitalized in 2004 for a mental health evaluation, told staff he had killed a man years before. He was not arrested then.
He was arrested for the killing in 2007.
