NFL player from D.C. area arrested, faces felony charges

WASHINGTON – An NFL player from the region has been arrested in D.C. and is facing felony charges.

Joe Lefeged, 25, from Germantown, is a safety for the Indianapolis Colts. D.C. Police Officer Araz Alali says Lefeged was in a vehicle that was pulled over just after midnight on Blaine Street in northeast D.C., off Benning Road. Lefeged was a passenger, Alali told the Associated Press.

Police say there may have been a chase before the vehicle was pulled over. The second man arrested was Aaron Timothy Wilson, 23, of Potomac. According to the Associated Press, the driver fled.

Officers found a handgun and an open container of alcohol in the car, according to Alali. Court records show police smelled marijuana in the car.

Lefeged and Wilson face charges including carrying a pistol without a license and possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.

Lefeged went to Northwest High School and Rutgers University. Lefeged was signed as an undrafted free agent before the 2011 season. He has started a handful of games for the Colts as a defensive back and kick returner during his two years in the league.
