Washington Examiner ends local coverage

Friday - 6/14/2013, 11:01am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Examiner is ending local coverage.

The last edition of the free newspaper that covered D.C.-area news for eight years is on newsstands Friday, carrying the headline "Thank you, Washington." A new website and weekly magazine focused on national politics will debut next week.

The paper's Denver-based parent company, Clarity Media Group, announced in March that the print publication would end Friday and that it would eliminate coverage of local news, sports and entertainment. A total of 87 editorial and business employees are being laid off, while 38 staffers will be retained. The company has said a redesigned website will go online Monday, and the weekly publication will debut on Wednesday.
