Ethics board admonishes DC Councilmember Orange

Friday - 5/3/2013, 10:50am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- D.C. Councilmember Vincent Orange has been admonished by the city's ethics board for improperly interfering with health officials trying to close a business infested by rats.

Orange was ordered to attend ethics training as a result of the admonishment Thursday by the three-member Board of Ethics and Government Accountability. An admonishment is less severe than a reprimand or censure.

The board found Orange had violated the council's code of conduct by asking a health inspector to allow Sam Wang Produce in northeast Washington to remain open during an incident in December. After interacting with Orange, the officials left without shutting the business down, though they later returned.

If he completes the ethics training Orange can apply in six months to have the admonishment expunged from his record.
