Metro: Person struck, killed by train at Gallery Place

WASHINGTON – Metro riders experienced delays on the Green and Yellow lines after a train struck and killed a man at the Gallery Place-Chinatown station Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at about 8 a.m. A Metro spokesperson says a Yellow Line train headed toward Mount Vernon Square hit the person, who died.

In a release, the agency says “an adult male intentionally placed himself in the path” of the train.

The suicide is the second this year and the eighth seen by Metro since the agency began a program to curb such deaths about a year ago. In 2012, there were 11 suicide attempts via Metro — six were fatal, while five were not.

In 2009, Metro says 12 people were hit by trains. Seven were struck in 2010, and 13 in 2011.

Metro warned of delays in both directions for the Green and Yellow lines following the incident, as well as on the Blue Line. Green and Yellow line trains were single-tracking between Archives and Mount Vernon Square.

Metro spokeswoman Caroline Lukas said the situation should be cleared by the evening rush hour. The agency said normal, two-track service was restored between Archives and Mount Vernon Square by 10:50 a.m.
