Thursday - 12/13/2012, 10:39am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hundreds of musicians who play the tuba, sousaphone and euphonium will be filling the Kennedy Center in Washington for the annual "Merry TubaChristmas" show.

Thursday's free, one-hour show begins at 6 p.m. on the Millennium Stage. Participants in the show will begin rehearsing at 3 p.m. About 250 tubs players are expected.

This is the 22nd year the Kennedy Center has put on the show.

Other TubaChristmas events are also held around the country. The first concert was conceived by tuba player Harvey Phillips and held in New York in 1974. The concert was a tribute to William J. Bell, a tuba player and teacher.
