Former official: Gandhi tried to control audits

Wednesday - 11/28/2012, 4:07pm  ET

WASHINGTON - The former head of internal affairs for District of Columbia Chief Financial Officer Natwar Gandhi says Gandhi tried to control the content and release of audits and feared that making audits public would "make him look bad."

Robert Andary made his comments in a deposition as part of a wrongful-termination lawsuit filed by the CFO's former chief contracting officer. The deposition was initially obtained by The Washington Post through a public-records request.

Andary says Gandhi "inserted himself" into the auditing process and that he would not agree to that.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has launched an inquiry into audits in Gandhi's office.

Agency spokesman David Umansky says in a statement that Andary's reports were not changed or kept from the public. He says Andary's testimony shows only "philosophical differences."
