2 fired after leaving special needs child on bus

Wednesday - 11/28/2012, 7:27am  ET

WASHINGTON - Officials in Washington say two people have been fired after leaving a 4-year-old boy with special needs on a school bus for hours.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education, which is responsible for transporting special-needs students in the city, says the boy was picked up at 7:35 a.m. Tuesday and the bus went to his school. It is unclear why he did not get off.

The bus driver and an attendant returned the bus to the terminal and got off but did not notice the child, who had apparently fallen asleep.

The student was found in his booster seat more than six hours later when the driver and attendant went to inspect the vehicle before going on their afternoon route. The boy was released to his mother.
