Needy D.C. residents get early Thanksgiving meal

Wednesday - 11/21/2012, 6:42am  ET

WASHINGTON - About 5,000 District of Columbia residents are expected to have a free Thanksgiving feast at the Washington Convention Center.

The 13th annual Safeway Feast of Sharing includes a traditional turkey meal and trimmings served by hundreds of volunteers on Wednesday.

The event also features a job fair and a free clothing distribution for those in need. Organizers are also offering free health screenings, flu vaccines and diabetes testing.

The doors open at 10 a.m., and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Organizers are expecting about the same demand for the meal as last year. That's at least 1,000 more attendees than in 2009.
