WASHINGTON - D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown is proposing a new plan that would extend alcohol sales hours in bars on holidays and throughout some holiday weekends.

The Washington Examiner ( http://bit.ly/J2gsUQ) reports that Brown's proposal, announced on Wednesday, would allow bars to sell alcohol until 4 a.m. on all city and federal holidays. It would allow sales until 4 a.m. throughout the weekends surrounding New Year's Eve, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.

The move comes after a council committee rejected a proposal designed to raise an extra $3.2 million in revenue through additional alcohol sales. The committee recommended that the district instead raise its alcohol tax by 6 cents per drink.

Brown says his plan would eliminate the need for raising the alcohol tax.
